Calling 911

Dialing 911

Dialing 9-1-1 is for an emergency and to provide information for responding law enforcement and emergency medical and fire personnel.  An emergency is any situation that would require emergency personnel to respond quickly to prevent further injury or endangerment to life, loss or damage to property, or in progress crimes.  If you don’t know if you have an emergency, call 9-1-1 and an Emergency Communications Officer will determine if you have an emergency.

DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 FOR:

  • Information
  • Court or Summons Information.
  • For your pet or wildlife.
  • or testing your Phones.

If you dial 9-1-1 accidentally, please remain on the line so the 9-1-1 Operator can verify your information.  If we can’t verify your information, our Agency will send a Sheriff’s Deputy to your home or place of business to verify your information and ensure that there is no emergency.

Our Non-Emergency Dispatch number is (540) 582-7115.

Misuse of 911 is a criminal offense under Virginia Code Sec. 18.2-429, which is punishable up to $2,500.00 fine and/or one year in jail.
